The Last Day of Treatment

My last day of treatment was pretty emotional. I had a bit out it here but I wanted to write a bit more.

I woke up at about 4:30. This was really early, but I had also slept for a little more than 7 hours which I think is the more important part.

I got into a sitz bath first thing and sat for about 15 minutes.

Time to make some coffee now. Mmm ... glorious coffee.

Take ibuprofen to help with the inflammation and pain. It helps.

Next up, checking my email and reading the Django News Newsletter as I do every Friday. Mark a couple of articles for reading later on.

6:20 ... time to take my allergy pill

6:55 make peanut butter and blackberry jam toast knowing that this is the last time (for a while at least) that I have to eat breakfast at a prescribed time.

7:00 log into my work computer to start my day. I'm pretty sure I don't be able to last too much past 12 and I want to make sure I get everything done I need to get done.

7:30 last time I need to take 1650mg of Capaciteban in the morning. I cry a little bit.

8:15 - 8:45 two different stand ups with two different teams. Everything seems to be on track for the upgrade.

8:45 have a 90 day review with the newest member of my team. She's a rock star and her 90 day reflects that

9:00 I may have pushed myself a bit too hard. I go lay down to rest up

9:45 get dressed and go out to my last radiation appointment with Emily. She went and bought bundt cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes for the staff at the oncology office.

10:00 arrive at office and wait a few minutes for my treatment time

10:10 Tony says it's my turn so I walk back to the radiation room, hopefully for the last time. It's jersey day and Tony, Marshall and Mo are all pretty excited by my Fuego Firebirds Jersey. As I lay down on the table I ask people are huggers or fist bumpers. They all tell me they'd be a hugger for me. A few tears in my eyes.

10:17 The door opens and Marshall walks in. He says congratulations. He works to push back all of the machinery and lower the table so I can get down. He helps me sit up and I step off the table ... for the last time. I give Marshall a hug and start to cry. I walk out of the room and see Mo. I give her a big hug. I look to my left and I see Tony with a big smile on his face and a certificate of completion for me. I cry a bit more and give him a hug.

They all tell me what a great job I did. I cry some more

10:19 I walk to the nurses desk. They tell me to ring the bell and I do. I ring it a couple of times. Not too hard, but hard enough. I cry a little more.

10:20 I walk towards the waiting room and some people are clapping. I let everyone know that I'm not crying, it's just my eyes sweating. Emily is there and she gives me a big hug. I cry a little more. I make my follow up appointment and leave my last day of radiation treatment

Most of the rest of my day is spent resting. I check emails, take a few calls, but mostly just sit in a dark room. I'm pretty spent. I also watch season 1 of Shoresey (for probably the 5th or 6th time)

19:30 I take my last dose of Capaciteban. I go through my normal routine to make sure I wash my hands before I touch anything else. That shit is fucking poison you know

19:31 I walk to my star chart and add my last star ... it's a bit off kilter but I don't care. I'm crying. I give Emily a high five and a hug and start to cry and sob uncontrollably. I thank her for being with me on this journey. I tell her that I love her. She says she loves me too.

By 20:30 I'm in bed and asleep. It was the most intense day of feels I've had in a very long time. Each thing was a milestone. Each thing had significance.
