Week 2 Round 1

cancer

It was a tough week. Both on the cancer front and the work front. Some difficult decisions were made and I basically haven't slept well since Monday night. And even that wasn't a great night's sleep.

I think I'm adjusting to the chemo well enough. I don't get too nauseous. At least I don't think I do. I don't eat as much as I probably should. Emily keeps reminding / encouraging me to eat. I do my best. This week it looks like I've only lost a little less than a pound. Much better than the week before, but I'm still down about 8 pounds in a little less than 2 weeks.

I've only got 3 more sets of chemo pills to take and then I get SEVEN FUCKING glorious days off. I'm hopeful that by next Saturday I'm feeling well enough to have fun at a BBQ at Dean's house. I'm going to go regardless of how I'm feeling. I just might not be able to stay as long as I want to.

Abby starts her Junior year on Monday, so Emily is dropping her off today. I won't be able to make it because I'm not sure I can handle the car ride there and back. And honestly, I'd be pretty useless moving stuff upstairs.

I started attending a virtual Cancer support group on Thursday. I had hoped to go last week, but I was in the office that Thursday and by the end of the day I was beat. It's a 2 hour session with other people living with Cancer. The group was very welcoming and supportive. As I listened to their stories I felt like my cancer "wasn't so bad" and that maybe I didn't belong. Some of the things these folks have been through and are going through sounded so much tougher than where I'm at.

When it was my turn to share I didn't really know where to start. I did my best to tell a coherent narrative of the shit that I've been through since February. At the end I was greeted with thanks for sharing and support. One of the participants said something to the effect of, "Glad you're here, wish you didn't have to be."

Last night (Friday) was the first good night's sleep I've had since Monday. The Apple Health app rated by 6 hours and 28 minutes as a solid score of 89. The previous few nights have been in the mid 50s with only about 4 and half to five and half hours.

I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a good week for me on the health front. The work stuff will still be stressful I'm sure, but not having to take the chemo will surely be a mental relief at least.
